As an artist, I focus on humanistic, social, and reflective themes, capturing emotions through documentary-style work to reflect viewers' experiences and evoke participation. My series "Presences / Essences" uses symbolic color and bursts of emotion within playful, surreal contexts, blending human figures and everyday elements to narrate stories. Through mixed media, including collage, painting, and photography, my work is an introspective journey that seeks healing and reconciliation, offering hope and courage amidst life's changes.

I wanted to honor Jackie Shane, a dynamic performer from the south who made their name in the Canadian club scene. They were nearly forgotten. They came back home to tend to their ailing mother. I think of their influence all the time. Pathos is a plant I always associate with mothers and aunties. Every black woman I knew had this plant trailing through their house. I wanted to honor this Mother Auntie.

I was born in Michoacan, Mexico, and crossed the border into the US as a toddler, growing up in Perth Amboy, NJ, and spending many childhood days in Oak Cliff, Texas. Diagnosed with depression at a young age, I struggled with belonging and often turned to artistic expression to communicate what I couldn't put into words. Painting has been a constant in my life since 2002. During the pandemic in 2020, it became a way to cope with Fibromyalgia and C-PTSD symptoms, helping me explore and heal from my past traumas while embracing my identity as a brown, queer, and autistic woman.

My pieces feature intricate line work, with each line conveying distinct meanings and emotions. I create Lino cuts, carefully carving each design, and use ink and brushes to craft drawings filled with various patterns. Inspired by ancestral artworks, including paintings and everyday items like plates, clothing, and pots, I express my identity through my art and clothing despite not being openly out yet.

Much of my work is inspired by my childhood influences. From an early age, I knew I was different, and dance and art became my true forms of expression. Dancing the traditional dances of my people made me feel alive, while my art begins with an emotion, translating feelings into images. I take pride in sharing a birthday with Frida Kahlo and having a name that starts with an F—coincidence? I think not. I draw inspiration from everything related to my beloved Mexico, Mi querido Mexico.
